The E-Volution Continues
A first look at the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

There are few more iconic vehicles in existence than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Striking a perfect synergy of luxury, performance and style, the E-Class is celebrated and revered the world over. For 2010, Mercedes-Benz sets out to take their eighth-generation flagship to the next level.

Though it’s been repeatedly imitated by automakers on every continent, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always stood alone atop the luxury segment. While imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, it seems as though nobody has ever gotten it quite right. In 2010, that divide grows even wider as the newest sedan, coupe and AMG iterations of Mercedes-Benz finest are improved in every way.

Outside, the 2010 E-Class returns to its powerful, imposing roots with a design that’s noticeably enhanced and more athletic than in years past. The eighth-generation sedan exemplifies the constant tug-of-war between luxury and sport, combining a wide, muscular body structure with sleek, sweeping lines. With a signature chrome grille and flanking dual headlamps to sculpted side paneling and an aggressive dual exhaust, there is legitimate and expert craftsmanship at work here.

The Coupe continues the Mercedes-Benz visionary design work though it sets its aim clearly at the sport end of the spectrum. Pointed toward the road like an arrow, its lines are more powerful and pronounced than the softer, more beveled edges of the sedan. Its intentions are made abundantly clear by the bold, unmistakable Mercedes-Benz crest that so prominently adorns its grille.
The four-door AMG model finds a happy medium between the E-Class Coupe and Sedan and is anything but a compromise. Premium luxury is joined by extraordinary performance and unique, aerodynamic body styling to create one of Mercedes-Benz most appealing and fundamentally satisfying vehicles to date. Sport-styled front fascia, side skirts and fenders, as well as a black mesh lower grille and exclusive 18-inch, five-spoke alloys place the 2010 AMG light years ahead of any other luxury sport sedan.

Beneath the hood, the newest evolution of the E-Class wants for nothing. Sedan and Coupe models offer a choice of engines: a robust 268-hp V6 or a powerful 382-hp V8, both controlled by seven-speed automatic transmissions. The Sedan adds the advanced, confident footing of optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive while the Coupe features a more dynamic agility control sport suspension for exceptional ride control and precision.

The 2010 AMG is powered by a 6.3-liter V8 engine capable of 518 hp and 465 lb/ft of torque through a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission, which shifts effortlessly through each gear in about 100 milliseconds. Mercedes-Benz sport-tuned suspension system and Electronic Stability Program are backed by high-powered, performance brakes and a fluid performance exhaust. Nothing matches the performance of the latest E63 AMG. Nothing even comes close.

The forward thinking and continued evolution of the E-Class is even more apparent inside where a redesigned dash is more attractive than ever before, and a finely appointed and brilliantly crafted interior melds comfort and convenience. Careful stitching, exceptional refinement and (quite literally) 14-way power heated leather seats place driver and passenger at the controls of one of the most advanced cabins ever built.

The center stack, complete with navigation, Bluetooth hands-free phone and premium audio systems, acts as your central hub for entertainment, information and communication. Multi-zone climate control is as precise as it is comfortable, and elegant, powerful gauges and controls convey a quality and elegance like no other.

Safety, too, has been improved and advanced for Mercedes-Benz latest E-Class. Nine intelligently placed airbags come standard as do integrated NECK-PRO head restraints and the Mercedes-Benz-exclusive PRE-SAFE impact-preparedness system. This year’s models feature an advanced driver-drowsiness monitor and adaptive headlamps.

The 2010 Mercedes E-Class is due to hit showrooms this summer. The evolution continues.
